Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Haywire Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or did there exist a thread holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they are improving or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Return

At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team lacking backup options.

He joined originally when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was persistently working to determine the exact type of his skill set. Billed as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
